Did you know that Nancy Rubins' Monochrome for Austin—a mesmerizing sculpture of 70 canoes suspended in perfect balance over Speedway—reaches deep into the earth, and is secured to bedrock 40 feet below? Commissioned by Landmarks in 2015, this iconic work beautifully showcases the synergy of art and engineering, with structural expertise provided by UT alum Jamie Garza. 

As we approach its 10th anniversary in 2025, we celebrate how Monochrome has transformed the Forty Acres. It serves as a gathering spot, a spark for conversation, and an educational centerpiece, captivating the more than 100,000 people who pass through campus each day. 

You may not know the dedication required to preserve Monochrome and the nearly 50 other pieces in the Landmarks collection. Staff, volunteers, and conservators work tirelessly to ensure each work remains safe and beautiful for all visitors. This level of care requires funding—for materials, expertise, and ongoing maintenance—and is only possible with your help.

Here’s how your gift helps: 

$1,000 Provides microphones and speaker rentals for one Landmarks event
$500 Provides meals and refreshments throughout the day for staff and volunteers at Paws for Public Art
$250 Provides program printing for one Landmarks event
$100 Provides maps and brochures at a free guided tour
$50 Allows Landmarks to host one volunteer recruitment event in the fall 

From now until December 31, please make a gift to Landmarks. Your support ensures the preservation of the collection, enhances educational programs, and keeps remarkable art free and accessible to all.
